Pest Identification in the UAE

Most identification is done from droppings

People rarely see the pest. They see what it left, and that is usually enough, droppings, damage, shed skins and smear marks each point somewhere specific.

Getting it right matters because the treatments are different. Rat bait placed for a mouse sits untouched. Flea bites treated as bed bugs waste a fortnight. Carpet beetle damage blamed on moths means the actual source stays in the wardrobe.

Quick tells

What the evidence points to

Droppings 12–18mm, tapered

Rats. Concentrated along a single run rather than scattered.

Droppings 3–6mm, rice-shaped

Mice. Scattered, and close to the nest, which will be within a few metres.

Dark specks on a mattress seam

Bed bugs. Digested blood, and it smears rust-red if wiped with a damp cloth.

Mud tubes on a wall or foundation

Termites. Pencil-width earth tubes running up a surface toward timber.

Small brown egg cases

Cockroaches. Purse-shaped, 6–10mm, glued into a crevice near a harbourage.

Holes in wool, no moths seen

Carpet beetle rather than clothes moth. Look for shed larval skins.

Rats or mice?

The most common misidentification, and the most consequential, because the bait placement is different.

  • Droppings. Rat: 12–18mm, tapered at one end. Mouse: 3–6mm, like a grain of rice.
  • Noise. Rats are audible, scratching and rolling in a ceiling. Mice usually are not.
  • Gap size. Mice come through 6mm; rats need about 20mm.
  • Location. Roof rats travel high, ceilings, AC risers, cable trays. Mice stay low and near the nest.

Bed bugs, fleas or mosquitoes?

Three very different problems that all present as bites.

  • Bed bugs. Bites in lines or clusters, usually on skin exposed while sleeping. Look for dark specks on mattress seams and behind the headboard.
  • Fleas. Bites concentrated around ankles and lower legs, often after a pet has been outdoors.
  • Mosquitoes. Isolated raised bites on any exposed skin, and you generally know about it at the time.

Bites alone are not diagnostic, people react very differently to the same insect. Look for the physical evidence.

Termites or ants?

Both produce winged forms that swarm, and they get confused constantly.

  • Waist. Ants have a pinched waist; termites are straight-sided.
  • Wings. A termite’s four wings are all the same length. An ant’s front wings are longer than the back.
  • Antennae. Straight on a termite, elbowed on an ant.
  • Evidence. Mud tubes and hollow-sounding timber mean termites. Soil piles at paving joints mean ants.

When to just send a photo

If none of the above settles it, a clear photograph usually will. Send one to the number on our contact page, identification from a photo is free and frequently ends the matter without a visit.

Useful photos: something next to a coin or a ruler for scale, the droppings rather than the animal, and the damage in context rather than close up.

FAQ

Pest identification: common questions

Can you identify a pest from a photo?

Usually, yes, and it costs nothing. Include something for scale and photograph the droppings or damage rather than trying to catch the animal.

I have bites but cannot find anything. What now?

Check mattress seams and the back of the headboard for dark specks first. If there is nothing there, fleas are more likely than bed bugs, particularly if the bites are around your ankles.

Are flying ants and flying termites the same thing?

No, and it matters. Termite wings are all the same length and the body has no waist. Termites indoors mean an established colony.

Does it matter if I get the species wrong?

Yes. The bait, the placement and sometimes the whole approach depend on it. Cockroach species differ; rat and mouse treatment differs; ant species differ enough that the wrong product makes the problem worse.
