Preparing for a Pest Treatment

What to do before the technician arrives, what to do afterwards, and the one thing people get wrong that undoes the whole visit.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Cleaning before we arrive. It is a natural instinct and it is the most common way a visit is wasted.

The trail, the droppings and the smear marks are the evidence a technician works from. Wipe them away and the inspection starts from nothing. Clean afterwards, not before.

The second most common is cleaning away bait placements in the days after a treatment, which removes the treatment itself.

Before the visit

What actually helps

Leave the evidence

Do not clean trails, droppings or smear marks. They are what the inspection reads.

Note where and when

A list of where you have seen activity, and at what time of day, is genuinely useful.

Clear access

Empty the cupboard under the sink and move what blocks the areas being treated.

Plan for pets

Fish tanks covered and pumps off during spraying; cats and dogs out of treated rooms.

Cover food and utensils

Anything open in a kitchen put away or covered before the visit.

Tell us about children or allergies

It changes what we use and where. Say so when booking, not on the day.

For a bed bug treatment

Bed bugs need more preparation than anything else, and skipping it is why a second treatment gets needed.

  • Strip the bed and wash all bedding at 60°C or above. Tumble dry hot if you can.
  • Bag laundered items and keep them sealed until the treatment is done, otherwise they get re-infested on the way back.
  • Do not move mattresses or furniture to another room. It is the single most reliable way to spread the problem.
  • Pull beds and bedside units away from the walls so frames and skirting can be reached.
  • Vacuum thoroughly, then seal and dispose of the bag outside the property.

For a cockroach treatment

  • Empty the cupboards being treated, particularly under the sink and around the oven.
  • Do not clean the kitchen thoroughly beforehand, the harbourage evidence is needed.
  • Fix any dripping tap before the visit if you can. Removing the water source materially improves the result.
  • After the visit, do not wipe or wash the areas where gel has been placed. It is the treatment.

Afterwards

  • Stay out of sprayed rooms for the time the technician tells you, usually two to four hours, until dry.
  • Ventilate when you go back in.
  • Do not clean bait or gel placements. This is the single most important instruction on the page.
  • Expect more activity for a few days. Insects moving out of harbourage into the open is the treatment working, not failing.
  • Keep the follow-up appointment. For bed bugs, cockroaches and rodents the second visit is part of the job.

For a commercial kitchen

Treatment happens after close, with surfaces clear and food put away. Allow time for the treatment itself plus drying before the next service. We will agree the window with you rather than assume one, and staff should be briefed not to clean away placements during the morning set-up.

FAQ

Treatment preparation: common questions

Should I clean before you arrive?

No. It is the most common preparation mistake. The trails and droppings are the evidence the inspection works from. Clean afterwards.

How long do I stay out of the room?

Typically two to four hours after a spray treatment, until surfaces are dry. Gel and bait placements do not require you to leave at all. The technician will tell you exactly.

I am seeing more insects after the treatment. Has it failed?

Almost certainly the opposite. Insects moving out of harbourage into the open is what a working treatment looks like in the first few days.

Do I need to do anything with pets?

Cover fish tanks and turn off the pump during spraying, and keep cats and dogs out of treated rooms until dry. Tell us about pets when booking so we can plan for it.

Booked in, or still deciding?

Either way the inspection is free. Tell us what you are seeing and we will tell you what the visit will involve.
